Resumo

Roberto Burle Marx, a partir das idéias paisagísticas de seus jardins privados e públicos, difundiu uma nova concepção de projeto paisagístico, conjugado com a arquitetura moderna, a arte e a natureza brasileira. Esse artigo analisa duas de suas intervenções na cidade do Rio de Janeiro: 1) o Passeio de Copacabana, que por meio de suas calçadas em mosaico português, representou uma expressão de arte pública; 2) e o Largo da Carioca, onde estão presente alguns de seus elementos paisagísticos, conjugados com a arte. Para tanto, utiliza-se de pesquisa documental (projetos originais e registros históricos) e levantamento fotográfico (estado atual das obras). As intervenções de Burle Marx no espaço público do Rio de Janeiro, confirmam que este paisagista sempre projetou seus jardins como uma forma de arte destinada ao uso coletivo.

Abstract

Back to the future: old design, new heritage The paper will tackle the new modern heritages in the contemporary city; it will deal with procedures aiming to complete modern collections, made after its heritage listing. Two cases will be analyzed regarding this polemic design situation. At the international level, the church of Saint-Pierre, in the French city of Firminy, posthumous work of Le Corbusier, inaugurated in 2006. In the Brazilian context, the construction of the Ibirapuera’s Auditorium, designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1954 for the 400 years of São Paulo, but finished only in 2005. In the Firminy’s case, Le Corbusier was called by Eugène Claudius-Petit to design a group of buildings that should cover a Unité d’Habitation, a House of Culture for young people, a stadium and a church. Corbu, however, died in 1965. The church had raised only its two lower levels composing the robust base that should support the monumental concrete shell, until the definitive suspension of the works on 1979. In 2001, the Mayor, Dino Cinieri, decides to retake the church’s construction and bets on the rise in value of the Le Corbusier Heritage (transformed into French historic monument) in cultural, economic and tourist terms. The inauguration of the newest Corbusier’s building takes part in 2006 and transforms Firminy into the largest urban Le Corbusier site in Europe. The Brazilian case is similar, but has a fundamental difference: it’s not a posthumous work, it is rather an intervention made by the author himself, decades after the original design, which changes the nature of the debate. The paper aims to compare the history of these two modern buildings families and reflect about the arrival of its youngest members, tackling the polemics concerning both interventions, passing through themes like authenticity, authorship, relevance, and, of course, the peculiar operation of constructing new buildings based on old designs.
