Resumo

The International Extraordinary Congress of Art Critics and the present state of his thought and action This paper aims at understanding Lucio Costa’s positioning at the 1959 International Extraordinary Congress of Art Critics, at reflecting on his manifestations, and at evaluating the present state of his thought and action. Costa’s writings referred to an art pedagogy, since he affirmed it was necessary “to increase the public’s intelligence of the artistic phenomenon, whether aiming at the classes already favored by culture or the masses on the way to reach it”, now favored by industrial scale production. Back in 1952, at the International Congress of Artists in Venice, when Costa presented his text “The Architect and Contemporary Society”, he defended the integration of arts to the whole of architectural composition, as long as each one preserved its identity. Can the integration of arts and the increase of the artistic phenomenon knowledge help to face the current artistic crisis? What other teachings of the intellectual mentor of modern Brazilian architecture can help us today as an alternative to the “anything goes” in arts and, especially, in Brazilian architecture?
